One of the concerns we frequently encounter in women diagnosed with breast cancer is the loss of a feminine image. However, in today's medicine, this can be prevented and even a more aesthetic appearance can be provided. Thanks to new developments in medicine, it has become possible to protect the breast in the surgical treatment of breast cancer.
Is it possible to remove only the cancerous area?
It is possible to remove only the cancerous area; we call these surgeries breast protective surgery, these surgeries are called breast protective surgery.
The tumor is removed with clean surgical borders and symmetry can be provided with the opposite breast in the same session using the breast's own tissue or implant placement. Thus, after the operation, women do not remain without breasts and lose nothing from their feminine appearance.
To whom breast protective can be done?
After breast cancer diagnosis, surgery options are varied. There are some factors that affect these options. The size of the cancer, which area of the breast is located, the breast size of the person, the individual factors should be evaluated. Breast protective surgery can be performed on all cancers with appropriate breast size and early stage. Radiotherapy is usually applied after this surgery. Radiotherapy is important for safely monitoring of the remaining breast tissue. With Radiotherapy, all cells that are left behind and still have the potential to carry cancer are destroyed.
When is Breast Protective Surgery cannot be applied?
In some cases, it is not correct to protect the breast medically. In cases that cannot receive radiotherapy after surgery, the entire breast should be removed. If there is a family history of breast cancer, the option of breast protective surgery is not appropriate.
In addition, large tumors in small breasts, tumors in more than one region of the breast, tumoral involvement through the milk ducts in the breast (ductal carcinoma in situ), having previously been given radiotherapy to the breast requires full removal of the breast.
If it is necessary to remove the whole breast, is it possible to make breast in the same session?
In cases where it is necessary to have a mastectomy, a new breast can be made in the same session using the implant or the body's own tissues or by combining the two methods. This is called (early restoration). In some cases the reconstruction may be delayed (late restoration). The choice in this matter must be determined by speaking between the patient and the doctor. In cases where there is no early reconstruction, the padding can be used inside the bra.
What is breast reconstruction?
In cases where the entire or part of the breast is removed, the process of breast formation is similar to the size and structure of the first breast. A new nipple can be created after reconstruction. In addition, the opposite breast can be reshaped in accordance with the new breast. For this purpose, the opposite breast can be reduced, lifted or enlarged as needed.
